Angelina Jolie dropped from St. John ads - The Money Times Posted: 09 Jan 2010 08:01 AM PST The luxury knitwear brand has admitted that they had to let go of the 34-year-old actress as she "overshadowed the brand". British model replaces Jolie Jolie was signed on as the public face of St. John in 2005 and their decision to drop her was announced in June 2008. "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette," said St. John chief executive Glenn McMahon. She also explained the brand's decision of hiring the British model. "We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John. We are evolving the brand," she said. George Sharp, executive vice president of design for St. John, who also donned the director's cap for the new ads, echoed McMahon's tone, describing Karen as the "epitome of the modern day woman…the St. John woman… strong, confident, sensual and approachable with effortless glamour". The ads will be launched to the public in the February issues of Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, and Vogue. Great run with Angelina No wonder, then St. John began to feel smaller in front of the famous face that endorsed it. However, they maintain that working with Jolie was great, but now it was time for them to look out for a fresher appeal. "It was a great run we had," said McMahon, while announcing the company's decision to call-it-off with the actress. "Three years is a long time to maintain any campaign, and we felt it was time to do something new and different." While some fans are disappointed at St. John's decision to drop the beautiful actress, others agree that she was in fact bigger than them. Some call it a loss for the knitwear company as the actress' long list of admirers may also go off with her. But that's the very reason they want her to leave -- It was more about her, than about the clothes. Like they said, she "overshadowed" the outfits. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Angelina Jolie Dropped for Being Too Famous - Limelife Posted: 09 Jan 2010 10:10 AM PST

How can someone be too famous to model?Angelina Jolie may be too famous for her own good. St. John, American crafters of luxury formal wear, have dropped the movie star because her very presence "overshadows the brand." Speaking to fashion magazine WWD, the manufacturer's chief executive officer, Glenn McMahon, said that Jolie was just too big to keep as the face of St. John. "She overshadowed the brand," he said. "We wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette." So who will replace the world's most famous actress? Ginger-head Karen Elson. The pale young model, and wife of White Stripes singer Jack White, represents the direction McMahon wants to see St. John headed. Karen is the "epitome of the modern day woman… the St. John woman… strong, confident, sensual and approachable with effortless glamour," says vice president of design for St. John, George Sharp. .
No word from Jolie yet on how she plans to exact revenge, but I'm having trouble seeing how someone can be too famous to be your model. Isn't that the kind of exposure you hope for? Anyway, St. John thinks they've found the next step in their evolution. "We needed to show a modern point of view of St. John," says McMahon. "We have evolved."
