Standing on a balcony in one of the most romantic cities in the world, Angelina Jolie looks stunning in an elegant gown on the latest set of her new movie.

The actress, 34, brought to mind a certain Shakespearean play as she filmed her scenes playing devious Interpol officer in a dove grey silk gown.

The glamorous location was a historic building overlooking the Palazzo Pisani-Moretta and the Grand Canal in Venice.

Angelina Jolie waves from a balcony in Venice, Italy while filming scenes for her new movie, 'The Tourist'.

Elegant scenes: Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp filmed The Tourist in Venice last night, where she plays an Interpol agent who uses his character

The scene appeared to take inspiration from Romeo and Juliet, which was set just down the road in nearby Verona after all.

Jolie blew a kiss and waved as she filmed scenes for The Tourist, while co-star Johnny Depp lurked in the background.

The 46-year-old had his turn to smoulder on the balcony during the previous day of filming

The plot of the film is centred around Miss Jolie, an Interpol agent who uses a broken-hearted American tourist (Depp) in an attempt to flush out a criminal with whom she once had an affair.

The highly-anticipated romantic thriller not only stars two of Hollywood's biggest names, but is directed by the Oscar-winning Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck who also oversaw The Lives of Others.

It is rumoured to contain steamy scenes between the two stars.

Mr Depp said recently: 'The Tourist is something that kind-of arrived with Angelina Jolie attached and it seems good. It seems like something different for me.

'If it's related to anything genre-wise it's got a North By Northwest feel to it that I like. I've seen her in a couple of things and she seems awfully great, you know: seems like a good girl. Loves her family, loves her man, loves the work.'

Miss Jolie has been accompanied to Venice by partner Brad Pitt and their children at the 16th century palace called Palazzo Mocenigo - the stunning venue has enough space for 140 people.

She is expected to be in Italy for the next three months after finishing filming on spy thriller Salt in New York at the end of last year.

Smouldering: Johnny Depp films two different scenes on the balcony the previous evening in Venice

She is now in in talks to star in the big screen adaptation of Ron Rash's 2008 book Serena: A Novel, directed by Darren Aronofsky.

The Oscar-winning actress would star in the film, which is set in the rugged mountains of 1929 North Carolina and follows a man named George Pemberton and his new ambitious wife, Serena, as they create a timber empire.

Serena pushes her husband to commit increasingly ruthless acts.

When she learns she cannot bear a child, Serena sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately.

Venice. Italy.

He was on Jonathan Ross only a week ago, and looked leaner than he does in these pictures. His face looked flawless

I. want. him.

he looks really bloated

Isn't she supposed to be taking a long break to spend time with her family? I guess we see what's more important to her. Btw, Johnny, be careful in those sex scenes!

Based on Angelina's track record, Johnny's wife had better stay on set 24/7 to make sure Ang doesn't get her claws into her husband. I'm sure Johnny wouldn't do something like that, but we all thought Brad and Jen's marriage was rock solid....

Mmmmmmm Johnny Depp.

Unflattering stills of Angelina and Johnny. These two are fine, especially Johnny, but for some reason I really can't see them having much on-screen chemistry. It would be nice if they proved me wrong.
