Angelina Jolie Afghanistan Girls School Opens - Post Chronicle Posted: 17 Mar 2010 07:06 AM PDT Angelina Jolie has opened a school for girls in Afghanistan after donating $75,000 (£50,000) towards education facilities for female students. The Hollywood actress visited the Tangi region in the war-torn country in October 2008, and was moved by the stories of displaced families who were reluctant to send their daughters to mixed schools for cultural reasons. Jolie, who works as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations (U.N), donated a sum of cash to help build a girls school in the region and the institution finally opened its doors on Monday (15Mar10) - 18 months after the star's visit. The building features eight classrooms, four administration buildings and can accommodate up to 800 students. Speaking at the opening ceremony,14-year-old Laila, whose family returned to Afghanistan from neighbouring Pakistan in 2008, praised Jolie and the U.N. for pouring money into education. She said, "I always had hopes and dreams of going to school. The hope to become a qualified teacher has revived in me." Her father, Ustad, adds, "This is what we needed here and I believe there is a need for every community if we want to build the future of our country - to build schools and get education." Angelina Jolie helps open a new primary school for ... - Entertainment and Showbiz! Posted: 16 Mar 2010 10:02 PM PDT If it was not for Angelina Jolie, hundreds of girls in Tangi, Afghanistan might never have received the opportunity to get proper education. The UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador donated $75,000 toward the school's construction when she visited the place in 2008. Thanks to her, 800 girls can now get themselves admitted in the new primary school for girls starting today. Admissions are going on in the eight classroom school which is packed with eight latrines. The first academic session starts this coming Monday. "This is what we needed here and I believe there is a need for every community if we want to build the future of our country — to build schools and get education," a former teacher said. UNICEF had already established a school with a capacity of 1300 students in the region but the plan was not thoughtful. Tangi, Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province is a backward place, where females are not allowed to interact with males but the school was co-educational (where boys and girls study together). Their school has unofficially become an exclusive center for boys, as none of the girls enter the premises. Angie's funding towards the exclusive girls school will help females get education.
