BRAD Pitt has allegedly told pals his relationship with Angelina Jolie has been a "hellish" existence.

The actor apparently didn't care when late last year he learned that no fewer than three tell-all books were being written about Brangelina.

"As far as he's concerned, no book could come close to accurately portraying the hellish existence he's had to endure at times during their relationship," a source close to the couple told the UK's Grazia magazine.

"He's no saint but in comparison to Angelina, Brad is the most straightforward guy you could care to meet.

"He's a traditional Midwestern boy of limited education who was no match for Angelina when she decided she wanted him.

"He was happy with Jennifer Aniston before she came along. Angelina chewed him up and now it looks like she's just about ready to spit out.

"Ask anyone who really knows Brad and they'll tell you he's been badly damaged over the past few years."

The angels and demons of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Jennifer ... - Women.timesonline

Message from fivefilters.org: If you can, please donate to the full-text RSS service so we can continue developing it.

On June 12 last year, at the Crystal and Lucy Awards in Los Angeles, Jennifer Aniston received an award for her contribution to film. In her acceptance speech she joked: "I have a strange parallel with movies I do and my life off screen. First, it was The Good Girl … which evolved into Rumor Has It, followed by Derailed. Then there was The Break-Up. Followed by the lighter side, Friends with Money. If anyone has a movie called Everlasting Love with an Adult Stable Man, that would be great!"

With those words, she summed up her story so far. It's a story that everyone knows backwards by now: beloved star of Friends marries Brad Pitt, the hottest actor of the day, who then stars opposite Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith, begins an affair and subsequently leaves his wife to start again.

Aniston was 40 when she made that acceptance speech, divorced for four years, single and childless and still waiting for the pieces to fall into place. No wonder she got such a warm reception that night. Every woman who has known what it's like to have her heart broken, who has experienced betrayal, jealousy or found themselves back where they started when they thought they'd finally found what they were looking for — in other words, most of us — identified with her situation.

For us, Aniston represents normal female vulnerability, in stark contrast to the alpha seductress with the iron will and the boundless ambition. Nobody's saying Jolie is that woman. But that's how the world has come to view this story — as a black-and-white clash between the good girl, who just wants to be happy, and the bad girl, who wants everything. And because this is Hollywood, and good always triumphs in the movies, we've never quite been prepared to accept that we'd really seen the last of Brad and Jen.

Now, nearly eight months after that speech, all eyes are once again on Jennifer. Every other week, there's a story circulating that Brangelina are finished, but this time the rumours have snowballed as the denials and public shows of togetherness failed to materialise. It is said that lawyers have been consulted to break up the couple's combined assets of £205m. Brad has bought a two-bedroom start-again home in the Hollywood Hills, with a cave, to lick his wounds.

Depending on who you believe, Angelina's been depressed since her mother's death and needs psychiatric help; globe-hopping and the "chaos" of their itinerant family life have taken their toll, and her weight/his drinking has become an issue; she had an affair with the dialect coach on her last movie, Salt (which the coach has denied); she's obsessively jealous of Jennifer; he's "boring and toxic"; she's attempted suicide; his family have never taken to her and now want him to cut his losses. Meanwhile, Brad and Jennifer have been "talking" (it's been a year since their alleged secret meeting in the blacked-out SUV on the set of The Baster) and were recently spotted cosying up behind the scenes at the celebrity telethon in aid of Haiti (where she looked amazing, by the way).

Whatever the truth, these are interesting — potentially thrilling — times for the Aniston fan club. Even if Pitt isn't calling, even if Brangelina are just going through a bad patch, we, the public, have scented the possibility of victory for the badly done by and the unfairly single. And, don't forget, this has never been just about Aniston's happiness — it's about the story panning out in a way that suits our agenda, and events proving that our biggest fears (rejection, superwomen we cannot compete with, the impossibility of ever being enough for anyone) are not so frightening after all.

The remarkable thing about this saga (and the reason why it lends itself so well to taking sides) is how extreme the contrast is between these two women's styles and personalities. Aniston is pretty, not beautiful, fit but she works at it — she's human. Jolie, meanwhile, is like a Na'vi crossed with Lara Croft, only hotter. Aside from her pneumatic good looks, she has a reputation for being sexually voracious and downright dirty.

She's bi-curious, wore a phial of her ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck, has hinted at masochistic tendencies and been pictured kissing her brother like a lover. And it's not all hype and posturing for the press. What woman didn't wince on Jennifer's behalf when reading about Angelina and Brad's noisy lovemaking drowning out the wildlife at the African lodge where they stayed at the start of their relationship? Jolie is like the sexual competition you conjure when you're losing your mind.

Meanwhile, Aniston is the good girlfriend, the one who actually shook Jolie's hand at the start of filming Mr & Mrs Smith and hoped they'd all be friends. Even when Pitt and Jolie became an item, she still chose to believe the affair had started after they'd split, until Jolie rammed it home in an interview, at which point Aniston declared that sharing this was "totally uncool". Raging and "tearing shirts" (Jolie's thing) is not Aniston's style.

Her revenge has amounted to being pictured on the cover of GQ, semi-nude in white shirt and knickers, wholesome and smiley, even when she's playing naughty. And, despite her efforts to date every good-looking bachelor in Hollywood (note, no marrieds for Jen), no man has come close to filling the vacancy for one monogamous, committed guy. Her nemesis, meanwhile, is on record saying: "I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship… We make sure that we never restrict each other."

And the glaring differences don't stop there. Pitt and Aniston are known to have argued about when to start the big family he'd always longed for. Jolie has spent the past five years beating the world speed record for acquiring hers. She and Pitt now have three adopted children, Maddox, Pax and Zahara, and three biological children, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. (In recent weeks, Jolie is said to be pushing to adopt number seven from Haiti.)

They move as a pack around the globe like a self-styled international royal family, jetting between properties the size of small principalities — including a wildlife reserve in Cambodia and a 35-bedroom chateau in the south of France — and attracting the kind of attention that makes Princess Diana's press entourage look lame. (Memorably, they rented an entire five-star hotel in Namibia for the birth of Shiloh, and asked the government to declare the stretch of coast a no-fly zone.) Everything Jolie does is big-scale, highly ambitious and carefully orchestrated.

After she gave birth to the twins, for example, she personally negotiated the sale of first-picture rights, raising $14m for the Jolie-Pitt Foundation for humanitarian work. She's a global ambassador for the UN, and her own agent and publicist. And then there's the small matter of the day job — her full-on, full-time career as an actress. Needless to say, the films she makes are at the very opposite end of the spectrum from the feelgood romcoms that are Aniston's natural territory. She even has an Oscar.

In some ways, the fact that Aniston and Jolie are two entirely different species makes Aniston's current position stronger (that is, if she wants him back). Aniston let Pitt go off to the set of Mr & Mrs Smith believing that a homebody southern family man would always choose a girl like her over some exotic screen siren. She thought she knew for sure that, whatever else, her husband was a simple guy looking for a simple family life. Now it's starting to look as if she was right, and Pitt could be ready to come home.

London, February 7 : Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly due to pour cold water on break up rumours by putting up a 'still together show' at the upcoming Academy Awards.

The couple is allegedly tired of the reports of an imminent split and wants to put an end to them with the massive PR exercise.

"Brad and Angie will take their time to smile, hold hands and pose for the cameras as if they were teenage sweethearts. They want to prove that far from being over, their relationship is rock solid," the Daily Star quoted a source close to them as saying.

An actress friend said: "She and Brad have been hurt like never before by some of the accusations and they want to put an end to it once and for all.

"They see little option but to fight back the only way they can - with a spectacular display of affection at the Oscars."
