They were rumoured to have consulted lawyers over custody of their six children and dividing their £205million fortune.

But last night, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie proved they were still very much an item as they attended the Directors Guild of America Awards in Los Angeles.

While declining to pose together on the red carpet at the star-studded bash, the couple were seen being 'extremely affectionate' as they mingled with their peers.

Pitt had been invited to the ceremony to present his Inglourious Basterds director Quentin Tarantino with a plaque for being nominated for the Outstanding Directional Achievement in Feature Film, which was won by Kathryn Bigelow.

Jolie wasn't expected to join Pitt, but perhaps recent speculation about their relationship prompted her to attend the event at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Century City.

The 34-year-old actress looked stunning in a green asymmetrical Elie Saab gown and Stuart Weitzman heels as she kept close quarters with Pitt.

After months of sporting a scraggly beard, Pitt had finally trimmed his beard into a neat goatee and looked dapper in a black suit.

He entertained the crowd by doing a spot-on impression of Tarantino before the director ascended the stage.

An onlooker at the Awards said the couple were incredibly affectionate throughout the four-hour event.

The guest told People magazine: 'They looked very giggly. They look like they are having a fun time. It's definitely a date.'

Their appearance at the DGA Awards came as a surprise because they have stayed away from the awards circuit this season.

Neither star attended the recent Golden Globes, where Pitt's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston garnered a lot of attention with her split-to-the-thigh dress, and are not expected at the Oscars in March.

Reports last week claimed the couple had met with lawyers to arrange their affairs in preparation for a possible split.

'Brad and Angelina had a meeting with a top law firm in LA in December, where they worked out terms of a legal document similar to a pre-nup,' a source told American magazine Life & Style.

'The couple signed the document in early January. They agreed to share their money and assets and custody of their six children, all of whom would live with Angelina in the event of their parents' breakup.

'They didn't talk to the lawyer about splitting, nor was that ever mentioned at the meeting.

'They were snippy with each other during the meeting,' added a second source. 'Brad and Angelina aren't splitting right now.

'Will they be together forever as a couple? Probably not. It'll run its course, but I think they're fine - for now.'

As well as Pitt and Jolie, a host of stars - both actors and directors - turned up to see their peers nominated.

Adding some glamour was Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks in figure-hugging burgundy dress with oversized corsage, while Avatar star Zoe Saldana kept it short and sweet in a gold patterned mini dress.

British Oscar hope Carey Mulligan looked chic in an asymmetrical deep pink dress, while Glee actress Lea Michele went for floor-length glamour in a gold gown.

Avatar director James Cameron lost out to his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow for the top prize, which she accepted for her Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker.
