Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt stepped out together in Amman, Jordan to treat their 14-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne to ice cream. The couple stopped at Lick Licious ice cream shop where Pitt shared his pecan, caramel and vanilla ice cream with Vivienne, and Jolie shared her mango ice cream with Knox. "They were walking down the street and saw out shop. Brad stopped and said, 'Do you guys have ice cream? I said 'Are you kidding? Of course!'" Ihab Fakhouri, a co-owner of the shop, tells People magazine. "The kids look so much like Angelina. They look like their mother. But they have Brad's eyes. They looked like really happy kids," he adds. Fakhouri snapped a photo of Jolie, Pitt and the twins and posted it on Twitter. People: Ambassador Jolie visits Syria - AZCentral.com Posted: 05 Oct 2009 11:16 AM PDT Refugee whisperer Angelina Jolie goes to Syria: The actress met with Iraqi refugees in Syria on Friday and urged the world not to forget the plight of those among them who cannot return home because of the trauma they suffered and the country's instability, the Associated Press reports. Jolie visited Syria in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations' refugee agency, UNHCR, and was accompanied by her partner, Brad Pitt, the agency says. Tens of thousands of Iraqi refugees have returned home from Syria and other neighboring countries over the past year, but many more are unable or unwilling to return to a country still shaken by violence. "Most Iraqi refugees cannot return to Iraq in view of the severe trauma they experienced there, the uncertainty linked to the coming Iraqi elections, the security issues and the lack of basic services," a UNHCR statement quotes Jolie as saying. "They will, therefore, be in need of continued support from the international community." Nuptials called offRose McGowan back to breaking up her own relationships: The actress in 2007 began publicly dating Robert Rodriguez after rumors suggested she was responsible for his split from his wife of 16 years; now she has called off her engagement to the director, Radar Online reports. McGowan starred in Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" and appears in his upcoming "Machete." She also is slated to star in the Rodriguez-produced "Red Sonja." McGowan was engaged for two years to rocker Marilyn Manson. Rappers reach outAtlanta rappers Ludacris and T.I. are donating $10,000 each to help Atlanta flood victims, AccessAtlanta.com says. Recent heavy rain triggered widespread flooding across Georgia, causing $250 million in damage and placing more than a dozen counties on the list to receive federal aid. Franco to 'Hospital'Actor James Franco to take extended evil-twin safari to Port Charles: The "Spider-Man" and "Pineapple Express" star has signed on to guest-star on the ABC soap "General Hospital," USAToday.com reports. The recurring role starts Nov. 20, just in time for sweeps. 'Zombieland' opens on topThe undead were alive and well at movie theaters as Woody Harrelson's horror comedy "Zombieland" opened on top with $25 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The animated family tale "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" took in $16.7 million, slipping to second-place after two weekends at No. 1. The movie raised its domestic total to $82.4 million after three weekends. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Why are Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Syria? - The Christian Science Monitor Posted: 05 Oct 2009 02:55 AM PDT UNHCR ambassador and actor Angelina Jolie meets with Iraqi refugees in Damascus, Syria. (S. Malkawi / UNHCR)Photos (1 of 2) Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were in Syria to support the UNHCR's efforts to help Iraqi refugees. By David Clark Scott | International News Editor 10.04.09Brad and Angelina were in Syria on Friday. Most major charities and NGOs have their celebrity ambassadors – mostly because the cameras follow them. And attention – any attention – can mean funds and/or political support for their causes. The United Nation's High Commission for Refugees is no exception. Angelina Jolie has been working with the UNHCR since 2001. This isn't a new gig for her. And this wasn't her first trip to Syria to highlight the plight of Iraqi refugees. She was there in 2007, too. She's been to Iraq three times. On this trip, she and Brad met with Syrian president Bashar Assad and his wife, Asma, the UNHCR said. She also visited two Iraqi families living in one of Damascus' poorest neighborhoods. One family fled to Syria in July after their son was twice kidnapped for ransom, and his mother was assaulted. One UNHCR photo shows Jolie in tears as the mother describes her ordeal. "I wanted to kill myself and the only reason I decided not to go ahead is because of my children," she told Jolie. Jolie said after the meeting: "It is clear that the Syrian people, no matter the challenges or difficulties they may face, have always shown generous hospitality to people in need. I hope that the rest of the world recognizes that we all have to share this burden and continue to take care of Iraqi refugees." Indeed, that hospitality has come at a price. As we reported, the influx in Iraq refugees has driven up housing prices in Syria and Jordan. The UNHCR estimates more that 4.2 million Iraqis have left their country since the start of the Iraq war in 2003. Some have started to return. Currently, the UNHCR is providing food and other support for 215,000 Iraqis in Syria. There are another 54,000 Iraqis living in Jordan. Since Jolie visited three Iraqi families in Syria two years ago, one family has returned to Iraq, and two have joined more than 25,000 Iraqi refugees who have been allowed to migrate to the US in the past three years. Prior to 2006, only 202 Iraqis were allowed into the US. But as we reported in June, life in the US for Iraqi refugees can be difficult. The cynic will say that Brad and Angelina are just polishing their professional images, doing good in front of the cameras. Does the help exceed the hype? We asked that question about celebrity activities in Africa. Check it out here. One final question: Would you have read about Iraqi refugees in Syria without the Brangelina hook? | MainComments1. Laura | 10.04.09Answer: Yes, absolutely, I would read about Iraqi refugees; especially if the CSM published a picture in a prominent place. 2. Hilary | 10.04.09Maybe your headline should have read: "Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Travel to Syria to Support Iraqi Refugees". Your current headline suggests that CSM doesn't entirely question the anti-intellectual notion that "do-gooding" is a bad thing. 3. sunny chicago | 10.05.09Any help is good help since there million and one people that are ready to undo the work and scoff at anybody who is doing the work. Thank you Brangelina for your hard work and don't let the cameras detract you. You are right, I probably would not have read the story with the brangelina hook but then again that is the whole idea of celebrity recruitment for important work that otherwise most likely will never be noticed because it happens to be in a country we hate for totally political reasons despite the fact the good they are doing for people. 4. Josie V. | 10.05.09I think Brangelina has been showing her good heart to all this people that need there help. This should not be questioned or take to a negative way. I love them for being so kind and helpfull. 5. Jeff | 10.05.09It's nice to see American celeb's that are doing something other than bad-mouthing the US from their safe place. 6. Jason | 10.05.09I hadn't even noticed the plight of Iraqi refugees in Syria… and I read Huffington Post obsessively (3x a day), in addition to the daily NY Times, realclearpolitics.com and others. So, no, I had not come across this story at all. One way to look at it is: Brangelina discovered the least-trodden int'l, refugee-related storyline, i.e., Syria, then pursued it w/ camera crews in tow. The second way, judging from Angie's tears, is, she's a fairly sensitive person who wants to use her celebrity to help accomplish something she feels is important. More power to her! Angelina Jolie - San Francisco Chronicle Posted: 05 Oct 2009 07:49 AM PDT Jolie In Awe Of Iraqi RefugeesAFP PHOTO/UNHCR /B. Heger-POOL UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie laughs with an internally displaced Iraqi boy at a makeshift camp northwest of Baghdad, on July 23. Jolie was on a one-day mission to Iraq to bring attention to the plight of displaced people in the region. Angelina Jolie has been left awestruck by the strength of the thousands of displaced citizens in war-torn Iraq after paying her third visit to the country on Thursday on behalf of the United Nations. The Hollywood actress, a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, met with four families who had been forced to relocate from their home in the district of Abu Ghraib to the west of Baghdad. The locals spoke to mother-of-six Jolie about the hardships they faced and their struggle to cover medical costs for various illnesses, according to the U.N. Refugee Agency. After hearing about one man's fight to raise his family in the tough conditions, the star said, "It takes a lot of strength for you to survive this life. I don't know if I would be strong enough to survive this." Jolie observed some changes in conditions since her last visit, but admitted a lot still needed to be done before the refugees could return to normality. She noted, "There are some changes. There are returns of displaced people, not a big number, but there is progress. This is a moment where things seem to be improving on the ground, but Iraqis need a lot of support and help to rebuild their lives." Jolie has vowed to return to do all she can to help refugees rebuild their lives, telling the families, "I want to come back and find you in a better place and in a different situation. We hope that UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and the government will support you in getting a piece of land. You need help not because you are poor, but because you are the future of Iraq." The star's trip to the Middle East began on Tuesday when she flew in with her 7-year-old son, Maddox, to attend the Arab Children's Congress in Amman, Jordan, where she was a guest of honor.
